Abbot Walsh to mark 60 years as priest
Abbot Raphael Walsh, the first abbot of Mount Michael Benedictine Abbey near Elkhorn, will mark the 60th anniversary of his ordination May 30.
A celebration is set for Thanksgiving Day, when the monks at Mount Michael traditionally observe the jubilees of ordination to the priesthood or monastic profession.
Ordained in 1952, Abbot Walsh came to Mount Michael in 1963 as prior, and a year later became the first abbot when the monastery was upgraded to an abbey. He served in that capacity for 25 years - from 1964 until he retired as abbot in 1989.
In retirement, he helped with development and public relations at the abbey and he served 13 years as associate pastor of St. James Parish in Omaha.
From 2003 to 2011, Abbot Walsh was president of Mount Michael Benedictine High School, and he continues to serve in the school's development office.
