Alegent Health buys CU Medical Center; expands academic affiliation with school
Faith-based healthcare provider Alegent Health purchased Creighton University's medical center Sept. 1 and expanded its academic affiliation with the Jesuit school in Omaha.
With the change, Omaha-based Alegent Health has become Alegent Creighton Health.
Under the expanded relationship with Creighton, Alegent purchased the school's medical center from Creighton and its former clinical partner, national corporation Tenet Healthcare. Alegent facilities also will become the primary teaching sites for the university's health sciences schools. Even before Sept. 1, Alegent Health and Creighton had 14 academic affiliations, including obstetrics and gynecology, nursing, pharmacy and psychiatry.
"We are excited to enhance our longtime relationship with Alegent Health through this new and strategically important affiliation," Jesuit Father Timothy Lannon, Creighton University president, said when the move with Alegent was announced. "The combined healthcare initiatives will further the missions of both faith-based organizations."
Alegent Creighton Health CEO Richard Hachten said it is exciting to provide a broader array of educational opportunities for Creighton students.
"Just as important is what we're providing the community," Hachten said, "the strongest healthcare system in the region."
