Dioceses file brief in Nebraska marriage case

All 21 Catholic dioceses located within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals are represented in the filing of a amicus curiae ('friend of the court") brief urging the court to reverse a lower court's ruling that the provision in Nebraska's state constitution defining marriage violates the U.S. Constitution.

In addition to Nebraska, the Eighth Circuit encompasses the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and Arkansas.

Archbishop praises permanent deacons for their service

The permanent diaconate is called the ministry of service, and deacons of the Archdiocese of Omaha, their wives and families gathered Sept. 9 to honor service "“ the ordination anniversaries of eight permanent deacons.

Honorees included four marking 25 years "“ Deacons Charles (Skip) Baughman, St. Bernard in Omaha; Ron Horner, St. Stephen the Martyr in Omaha; John Huck, St. Matthew and St. Mary in Bellevue; and Duane Thome, St. Columbkille in Papillion.

Shelter's name changes, but service to homeless remains

St. Vincent de Paul Homeless Family Shelter is operating under a new name these days: the Mary Catherine McAuley Center for Women and Families.

For 21 years, the Omaha shelter, located at 613 N. 17th St., has been serving the needs of women and children with the financial support of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a Catholic lay organization dedicated to helping the needy.
