A former pastor of St. Patrick Church was sentenced to five years probation for stealing $125,000 from the south Omaha parish. He was also ordered to repay $40,000.
Father Gutgsell faced one to 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine after pleading guilty to theft by deception on Feb. 16.
He was the pastor of St. Patrick, 1412 Castelar St., from 2001 until early this year. He is now receiving six months of treatment for compulsive spending.
The Archdiocese of Omaha filed a lawsuit April 9 against the former director of the Family Life Office in an attempt to recoup more than $800,000 she has been charged with stealing.
Sister Barbara Markey, ND, has been charged with theft by deception and is awaiting trial on that criminal charge. The April 9 lawsuit is a civil suit that is separate from the criminal charge.
