Students create balloon rosary

Students at St. Leonard School in Madison recently turned a living rosary into a floating rosary.

The students formed the living rosary, and as each said the prayer, tied a balloon to a line, forming a multi-colored rosary of balloons.

When the rosary was completed and all the balloons connected, the rosary was released from the school parking lot.

Blue balloons represented each Hail Mary prayer, white balloons represented each mystery, and the cross was made of cardboard and foil.

Evil can make us flee temporarily, but it can't stop us

A number of weeks ago, while preparing my Sunday homily, I came upon these words from the third chapter of Luke's Gospel where John the Baptist asks the crowds, "Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?" This plaintive cry came to mind as, like many of you, I was riveted by the images on television of people fleeing Von Maur and Westroads Mall after the shooting on Dec. 5.

Time to show appreciation by supporting collection

One of the most important collections of the year takes place this weekend at parishes across the archdiocese.

The 2008 Seminary Collection is an opportunity for the people of God to show their support for the archdiocese's 26 seminarians.

The annual cost of preparing a man for the priesthood is more than $22,000, so you can see the importance of the seminary collection.

Seminarians come from many walks of life in answer to God's call to serve his people. After they are ordained to the priesthood, they accompany us as we journey through life.

Pope Benedict: Family serves as first model of peace

This year's International World Day of Peace Message offered by Benedict XVI speaks to us about our first model of peaceful existence - our family. The Holy Father contends that peace is learned in the family; not merely the peace between nations, but peace of mind, peace of body, the peace of our human relationships, and peace with our global environment.

State's statutes are an ongoing story as Unicameral opens another session

Last week, in response to a notice from the Nebraska Supreme Court's Office of Publications, we obtained the newly released 2007 Supplement to state laws, edited and published by the Reviser of Statutes. This is the compilation of all legislation the Nebraska Legislature passed last year and its placement into the Revised Nebraska Statutes. It's the update of statutes amended by 2007 legislation, the codification of new legislation, and the removal of the relatively few statutes that were outright repealed.
