Founding pastor of St. James dies Sept. 20

Father Jerome Dickes, 85, the founding pastor of St. James Parish in Omaha, died Sept. 20 in Yankton, S.D.

His funeral Mass was Sept. 25 at Sacred Heart Church and burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery, both in Yankton.

Father Dickes was known as a man who committed himself to a life with the Lord, and being at the disposition of everyone - the suffering, the disabled, children and young people, married couples, their families and the elderly, said his sister, Sister Rosaleen Dickes, OSB.

He deeply loved the people he served, she said.

Groundbreaking is next step in growing St. Charles Borromeo

St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Gretna is the newest parish in the Archdiocese of Omaha as well as one of the fastest growing parishes.

What started out with 75 families in 2005 has grown to 385 families, Father Norman Hunke, pastor, told the Catholic Voice.

He said the parish has a youth ministry program, social justice group, Scripture study on Mondays, and a monthly prayer group.

In addition, RCIA and religious education participants have increased this year, too, Father Hunke said.
