Posters in store windows offered $25 coupons for every $100 spent in the days leading up to the Thanksgiving weekend. Advertisements were replete with buy-one-get-one-free proposals. The news media had hourly stories on the bleak outlook for retail sales.

Then on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, pilgrims to one of the nation's thousands of temples of consumerism caused a human sacrifice.
