Eighth-grade students from St. Pius X/St. Leo School in Omaha organized a special dress down day Feb. 20 to raise awareness and funds for refugees of Sudan.
The event raised $952. The Save Darfur Coalition received $100 for international efforts and Project Welcome received $852.
The students also welcomed Sister Joan Mueller, OSC, of Project Welcome, who talked to them about her program that aids local Sudanese refugees, most of whom are children.
Pope John XXIII Central Catholic High School in Elgin held its first blood drive Feb. 27, topping the goal of 40 pints by one.
Donors included teachers, students, parents and other members of the community, 15 of whom were first-time donors.
Students from St. John Neumann School in Clarkson held a special remembrance Mass during Catholic Schools Week for Nebraska service men and women who lost their lives during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
During the Mass, students honored each service member's name in a moment of silence. Crosses were made and letters were written and sent to each of the deceased's family in tribute of their loved one.
