Music in Catholic Schools celebrates three decades

Hours of practice paid off recently as members of the Music in Catholic Schools Honor Band performed rock and blues songs during a series of half-hour concerts that took the 50 students to six Omaha area Catholic schools.

The April 22 performances showed off the talent of some of the best flute, clarinet, trumpet, oboe, saxophone, French horn and percussion players in Omaha's Catholic schools.

These students might never have learned how to play a musical instrument if not for the Music in Catholic Schools program, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Holy Family Shrine gets 40-foot crucifix

For years the Holy Family Shrine, off Interstate 80 near Gretna, has sparked the curiosity of many travelers.

The addition of a 40-foot crucifix to the shrine's grounds should not only spark a curiosity, but a stirring in the soul as well, said Laura Kwong, board of director president.

She said placing the crucifix with Jesus facing the interstate, his arms outstretched, is to beckon travelers from all denominations.

"The cross is the reason for our redemption," Kwong said. "It stands as a symbol of that for the travelers and pilgrims."
