Archbishop George J. Lucas'
July 22, 2009, was a date that will be long remembered in the Archdiocese of Omaha. An overflow crowd greeted the archdiocese's new leader - Archbishop George J. Lucas - at his Mass of Installation at St. Cecilia Cathedral. Many of the more than 1,000 in attendance arrived an hour early for the historic occasion.
My house usually gets the premium cleaning job when we are entertaining friends and family. While I am a firm believer in the saying that a person comes to visit me and not my house, the extra effort expended in getting my house ready builds excitement and makes my house especially clean.
The administrative office of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been relocated to the rectory of the former St. Richard's Parish. The closing of the parish was a sad time for members, but the Society hopes to continue their lively Catholic presence that has shaped that neighborhood for nearly 50 years.
As you well know, moving is stressful. Packing, sorting, cleaning, tying up loose ends, finding help to do the heavy lifting, all of it adds up to one big headache.
The word "empathy" attracted much attention in recent weeks and not all of it for the good. Empathy was dragged into politics and suffered as a result. No surprise there.
The word was bandied about during the confirmation process for a nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court. To the casual listener, it sounded as if empathy was a quality inappropriate for a judge. The implication is that to be without empathy is a good thing.
There are, in fact, those people who do not exhibit empathy. Among them are sociopaths, snipers and assassins.
Wife has too many shoes?" The billboard on Interstate 94 caught my eye. The solution it advertised, off the next exit, was not Goodwill or a therapist, but a storage unit. Why get rid of the stilettos when you can pay $50 a month to stash them somewhere else?

The Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) is in need of volunteers in the Archdiocese of Omaha to work at local service sites helping people in need.
Volunteers' skills and interests will be matched to the particular needs of a community organization. IVC offers the opportunity for men and women, ages 50 and up, to share their skills, talents and life experiences with organizations that assist the poor or address poverty-related issues.
