October 2010

'Measure of love' is theme for 2010 Respect Life Program

Oct. 3 is designated by the bishops of the United States as Respect Life Sunday. The purpose of this annual event, which began in 1972, is to celebrate the sacred dignity of every human life. Respect Life Sunday is observed in almost every Catholic diocese in the United States.

In his encyclical "Evangelium Vitae," Pope John Paul II called for every nation to celebrate an annual "Day for Life." He said "the celebration of this day should be planned and carried out with the active participation of all sectors of the local church."

Blessings come right back at me

Sometimes, it seems, the best blessings are those that catch us by surprise. As a deacon assisting at weekend Masses, I see things - at least in my parish during Mass - from a different point of view. Sometimes that can be good ... other times, I'm not so sure, but I try not to let parishioners sleeping during my homily be of concern.

Because of the God-given dignity of each person, we must have a concern for all human life

The first Sunday in October is designated "Respect Life Sunday." Catholics and many others are asked to reflect in a particular way this weekend on both the gift of human life and the threats to innocent human life that seem to multiply year by year. We also pray, especially at the Eucharistic liturgy, to be strong enough to be witnesses to the sanctity of human life whenever we have the opportunity to do so.
