Cookies, donations and singing among Norfolk school's holiday activities

Sixth- and second-graders at Sacred Heart School in Norfolk decorated 900 Christmas cookies for the Norfolk Soup Kitchen as students helped people in need over the holidays.

Other school projects over the holidays included donating toys, raising more than $600 to support Haiti, singing Christmas carols and playing bingo with residents of a nursing home and raising more than $800 to help a parish family with a sick child.

Bellevue students make lunches, collect money

Twenty-one students in the seventh-grade and eighth-grade at St. Matthew the Evangelist School in Bellevue made about 1,500 sack lunches for the Open Door Mission in Omaha.

The students worked for about two hours this month making the lunches at the mission.

In a separate project, the school collected money and snack items for families staying at Rainbow House, which serves families with children who are receiving treatment at Children's Hospital in Omaha.

Skutt Catholic students donate to two charities

Students at V.J. and Angela Skutt Catholic High School in Omaha took on at least two projects to help those in need over the holidays.

The school's Ministry Council and Student Advisory Board sponsored an Advent drive for Youth Emergency Services in Omaha, collecting four car loads of toiletry items, baby supplies, including diapers and formula, and school supplies and clothes. Youth Emergency Services, a shelter and youth advocacy organization, helps children who have run away, are homeless or otherwise at risk.
