Deacon Cerveny remembered for service, faith

A deacon who served at St. James and St. Wenceslaus parishes in Omaha and battled cancer in recent years died May 22. Deacon John Cerveny was 72.

A funeral Mass was held May 27 at St. Stephen the Martyr Church and interment was at Calvary Cemetery, both in Omaha.

"John was willing to do most anything for most anybody," said Father James Tiegs, a longtime friend and the pastor at St. Stephen the Martyr, where Deacon Cerveny most recently was a parishioner. "John was quiet and reserved, but he was an anchor for his wife, for his kids and for his parish."
