Archbishop ordains 12 to diaconate; encourages humility and service

Next to his wedding day, Deacon Allen Wolverton of St. Peter Parish in Stanton said his ordination to the permanent diaconate May 5 was the happiest day of his life.

He said he was overwhelmed by the support he felt from family, friends, fellow deacons, priests and the faithful of the Archdiocese of Omaha who gathered at St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha for his ordination and that of 11 other men.

"I'm just so grateful to everyone who prayed for us while we were in formation," Deacon Wolverton said.

Leisure time provides opportunity to nurture our prayer experience

We have experienced such an early and beautiful spring in this part of the country that it seems hard to believe the official beginning of summer on the calendar is still a month from now. Most of us are making plans, or perhaps have already made them, for summer activities. We look forward to spending more time outside, enjoying some recreation and relaxation and, if we are fortunate, some vacation. In this hyper-scheduled age in which we live, we run the risk of over scheduling even our leisure time, so that we end up deprived of the rest and refreshment we had hoped to experience.

Official schedule

Official schedule Archbishop George J. Lucas' scheduled activities: May 18
» Confirmation, St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Omaha.

May 19
» Baccalaureate Mass, College of Saint Mary, Omaha.

May 20
» Confirmation, St. Columbkille Parish, Papillion.

May 22
» Archdiocesan Deposit and Loan Committee, chancery, Omaha.
» Archbishop's Committee for Development recognition dinner, Omaha.

May 24
» Archdiocesan Finance Committee meeting, chancery, Omaha.

Expansion, addition plans under way at Simon House

Thanks to an anonymous donation, the Simon House, a St. Vincent de Paul Society thrift store, food pantry and aid agency in Columbus, plans to triple the size of its sales floor and build a new processing center for donations this year, three years earlier than planned.

Steve Hollinrake, a board member and project coordinator, said the donor did not want the amount of the donation made public. But it will allow the agency to tackle the project earlier than set out in strategic planning that began about two years ago, Hollinrake said.

Organizations in Omaha partner for service projects in Walthill

Still in jeans from their half-day, casual Friday at Catholic Mutual Group, Donna Sutton and Lana Phinney loaded the bed of a white pickup May 4 with boxes of canned goods, cereal and sports drinks at the Juan Diego Center in Omaha.

Then the women drove 90 minutes north to deliver the goods to the Catholic Charities food pantry at St. Joseph Church in Walthill.

The delivery, which takes place every three weeks, is part of a partnership that started last winter between Catholic Mutual Group and Catholic Charities, both in Omaha.

Rwandan genocide survivor, author shares her message

More than 1,600 people - including about 600 schoolchildren - heard 1994 Rwandan genocide survivor Immaculee Ilibagiza's message of forgiveness and hope when the author spoke May 3-4 at Christ the King Church in Omaha.

"She inspired so many people," said Kathleen Lighthart, who helped organize Ilibagiza's visit through a women's rosary group at the parish. "How many times do you get 1,000 people to show up for something?"
