Drought, heat takes toll on farmers in archdiocese

An annual Mass for good weather recently drew double the usual crowd in Howells as farmers and ranchers in the archdiocese pray for rain in the midst of a drought that has hit Nebraska and more than half the country.

"Normally we have 100 people," said Father Leo Rigatuso, pastor of St. John Nepomucene in Howells, who celebrated the Mass in a city park July 17. "This year we were over 250."

Drought has turned the corn and grass brown, particularly northwest of town, he said. At St. John Cemetery near Howells the dry ground has formed cracks a foot deep.
