Supreme Court's same-sex marriage ruling harms common good, church leaders say

The U.S. Supreme Court's June 26 decision striking down the federal Defense of Marriage Act's denial of marriage-related federal benefits to same-sex couples is disappointing and will harm the common good, particularly children, said Deacon Tim McNeil, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Omaha.

"We are disappointed that the court did not affirm that the federal government has an obligation to promote traditional marriage," Deacon McNeil said. "The common good of all, especially our children, depends upon a society that strives to uphold the truth of marriage."
