Endowed Marian scholarship named for teacher

An endowed scholarship in honor of Bruce Esser, a long-time teacher at Marian High School in Omaha, has been established.

A physics teacher at Marian for 21 years, Esser announced his retirement in July. He will continue to coach the school's trap team and work as a substitute teacher.

The school originally planned to name a classroom in Esser's honor, but decided a scholarship would appropriately honor his dedication to the students.

Chapel dedicated at Roncalli Catholic

The chapel at Roncalli Catholic High School in Omaha was dedicated Aug. 20 to a former chaplain at the school. The late Father Aloysius McMahon, who died two years ago, served at then-Rummel High School during the 1969-70 school year. He also spent time as a missionary in South Africa, held various assignments at Boys Town and served as a pastor in the archdiocese.

Archbishop Emeritus Elden Francis Curtiss dedicated the chapel and with four other priests concelebrated an all-school Mass in roncalli Catholic's auditorium.

Activities remove first-day stress

The first day of school can be stressful for many students, but a variety of activities Aug. 14 at St. Patrick School in Elkhorn, helped put kindergarteners' minds at ease.

The day before back-to-school night, students received "jitter glitter" notes and glitter hearts to place under their pillows if they felt anxious about school. The next day in school, they mixed up jugs of "jitter juice" to enjoy while listening to the story "First Day Jitters."
