Preschoolers visit retirement center

Continuing a 15-year tradition, preschool students from St. Stephen the Martyr School in Omaha sang songs, made crafts, prayed and enjoyed cookies and punch Nov. 20 with residents of New Cassel Retirement Center, also in Omaha.

Students from the school have visited the center each spring and fall since 1998, when Father James Tiegs, now pastor, served as chaplain at the retirement center and celebrated Sunday night Masses at St. Stephen.

Visitors share Chinese culture

Sixth-graders at St. Stephen the Martyr School in Omaha learned that children in China typically have more homework than they do and probably would prefer playing table tennis over football.

But like children in the United States, the Chinese children likely would have tasted food at McDonald's and Pizza Hut restaurants and seen LeBron James play basketball.

Those lessons came from three Chinese visiting scholars at Creighton University, who taught the sixth-graders about life in China.

Guided by Your Holy Light

Guided by your holy light, we came to find you, despite the unknown fear,

As the stars arranged by your hands, drew us from far to near.

What did we find when we fell to our knees? The humbleness of Jesus your child,

As you chose to dwell upon this Earth, like a human small and frail.

A myriad of Angels from heaven sang in celestial choir,

They sang in joy of your coming upon this Earth to save us from Satan's fire.

Omaha native's ministry spanned country

Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Patrice McGovern, an Omaha native and graduate of now-closed Holy Name High School in Omaha, died Nov. 11 at the age of 92 at St. Dominic Villa in Sinsinawa, Wis.

A funeral Mass for Sister McGovern was held Nov. 14 at Queen of the Rosary Chapel in Sinsinawa. She was buried at the Sinsinawa Dominican Motherhouse, also in Sinsinawa.
