'Light is On' returning to archdiocese during Lent

The light is back on.

Again this year, Archbishop George J. Lucas is inviting Catholics to experience the sacrament of reconciliation during Lent through "The Light is On," a 2013 initiative credited with increasing awareness of and participation in confession.

To encourage people to seek the sacrament, priests in churches across the archdiocese will hear confessions on five Thursdays during Lent from 5:30 to 7 p.m., including March 13, 20, 27, April 3 and 10, in addition to regular reconciliation schedules, said Deacon Tim McNeil, chancellor.

Stolze to lead administrative services; veteran Karrer retiring after 20 years

An investment and real estate manager at an Omaha life insurance company has been hired as director of the Archdiocese of Omaha's administrative services division, replacing H. Lee Karrer, who is retiring March 31 after 20 years on the job.

James J. Stolze will begin a month-long orientation March 1 before taking over for Karrer April 1, the archdiocese announced Feb. 13.

40 Days for Life plans prayer rally

After years of focusing on around-the-clock prayer vigils, organizers of 40 Days for Life this spring will emphasize a strong presence outside abortion clinics during daytime hours.

The latest campaign, which will run from March 5, Ash Wednesday, through April 13, the Sunday before Easter, will continue to feature 24-hour vigils, but organizers particularly want volunteers to pray between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. each day, "so people who are passing by see that we are present out there," said Mary Crosby, local campaign coordinator.

Three suggestions to help experience Lent and prepare for the celebration at Easter

Ash Wednesday seems to be a little later than usual this year, but March 5 will be here soon. The season of Lent is a privileged time for all of us in the church. No matter where we find ourselves in terms of Catholic faith and practice, the Lord will be offering us a time of growth and renewal, a season of repentance and mercy. Even if the world around us were very supportive of a life of discipleship, which often it is not, any of us can grow lukewarm in our love for God and neighbor as time goes by.

Audience samples marriage presentation 'The Choice Wine'

About 500 people in Omaha were the first to taste "The Choice Wine," a new marriage enrichment presentation being taped for national distribution by the creators of That Man Is You! (TMIY!) men's faith formation and leadership program.

Through their participation, the Omaha audience could help couples across the United States when video from the Feb. 14-15 event, sprinkled with couple interviews and interactive polling, is made into a DVD program for use next year in parishes and dioceses.
