Deacon Ramirez, among archdiocese’s first permanent deacons, served 40 years

Deacon Joseph “Jose” Ramirez, a member of the archdiocese’s first permanent diaconate class whose service included helping establish Spanish Masses in south Omaha parishes, died May 25. He was 90.

Deacon Ramirez’s funeral Mass was May 31 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Omaha. Interment was at St. Mary Cemetery in Omaha.

Group aims to transform abortion debate into dialogue

A Kansas-based organization is offering workshops in Nebraska next month designed to help people transform the abortion debate into dialogue. “It’s to teach folks how to engage on the issue of abortion, as an opportunity for dialogue rather than contentious debate,” said Tom Venzor, associate director for pro-life and family with the Nebraska Catholic Conference.
