Bigos and Beer set for Nov. 9

A sampling of Polish and Eastern European beers and traditional foods will be featured at the annual “Bigos and Beer” dinner Nov. 9 at the Polish Home Belvedere Hall in Papillion.

Hosted by the Polish Heritage Society of Nebraska, the event raises money for the group’s St. John Paul II Scholarship Fund for students of Polish ancestry who will attend a Catholic high school in 2019.

Omaha priest honored for commitment to education

A priest of the archdiocese was honored for his dedication to the education of children and families.

Father Daniel Kampschneider, pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Omaha, received the Spirit of Father Flanagan Award from Boys Town Sept. 25 at its annual priest appreciation dinner. Father Steven Boes, Boys Town executive director, presented the award.

The Catholic crisis, in perspective

Perspective is at least as important when reading the signs of the times as it is in landscape painting. And so, in this autumn of our Catholic discontent, I was particularly grateful to hear from an old friend, Nina-Sophie Heereman, who offered some needed perspective on the Catholic circumstance in the United States.

Mercy Sister Ana Maria Pineda, a native of El Salvador now living in Omaha, was among thousands gathered in Rome on Oct. 14 to celebrate the canonization Mass of Archbishop Oscar Romero and six other servants of the church.
