Father Keating and the controversy surrounding centering prayer

Former Trappist Abbot Father Thomas Keating passed away Oct. 25. Father Keating was the primary architect of the centering prayer movement, which has thousands of adherents throughout the world. From the beginning, centering prayer has been surrounded by controversy. What is centering prayer? Is it in keeping with the Catholic tradition? Should Catholics practice it?

Writing, reporting, serving the church

As I leave the Archdiocese of Omaha to take a new job – with great gratitude on my part, still in the Catholic press – I have been given the opportunity to say “thank you.”

Eight years as news editor of the Catholic Voice have helped me meet so many people willing to help explain and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.

Jack Odgaard, left, receives the Nebraska Catholic Conference’s Gospel of Life Award from Tom Venzor, NCC’s executive director, Oct. 26 at the annual Bishops’ Pro-Life Banquet in Lincoln. Odgaard is a member of St. John Parish in Lincoln and a founding member of the pro-life organization Helpers of God’s Precious Infants.

Gospel of Life Award winner: Jack Odgaard

I first met Jack Odgaard in 2010, when I was a third-year law student at the University of Nebraska College of Law. I was with my friend, Jeff Kanger. In fact, it was Jeff’s idea to go and pray at the Planned Parenthood abortion mill that morning. We went to the facility at 38th and South streets in Lincoln.
