Financial irregularities prompt action
Cory Pelnar, business manager at St. Bernadette Parish in Omaha, was arrested Friday, Oct. 14, after archdiocesan officials discovered the theft of church funds.
The 41-year-old Pelnar was arrested on suspicion of felony theft.
Archdiocesan financial officers, who conduct regular financial reviews of every parish, found unexplained irregularities during the most recent review at St. Bernadette. After the discovery of missing church funds, the archdiocese turned its findings over to the Bellevue Police Department.
Father Joseph Taphorn, chancellor, said the archdiocese believes the amount of money involved totals about $180,000, and that no other individuals appear to be involved.
Due to the difficult circumstances and in the best interest of the parish, Father Robert Preisinger has resigned as pastor.
Father Steven Emanuel, chaplain at Daniel J. Gross Catholic High School, will serve as temporary administrator of St. Bernadette.
