‘Let’s Move!’ honors two Catholic schools
Fourth-graders use exercise balls instead of desk chairs at Archbishop Bergan Catholic School in Fremont, and teachers make it a point to give all students "movement breaks" between subjects.
At St. Margaret Mary School in Omaha, physical education/health instructor Sheri Cohen Vollmer helps students find at least one activity they could love for the rest of their lives.
Both schools were among only three in Nebraska and 544 elementary and high schools across the country recognized this year by First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative with a Let’s Move! Active Schools National Award. The third winning school in Nebraska was Franklin Public School in Franklin.
To win, schools must meet benchmarks in several areas: physical education, activity during, before and after school, staff involvement, and family and community engagement.
At St. Margaret Mary, Vollmer said, parents, teachers and administrators are "on board to focus on every student falling in love with fitness for life."
Wyatt Morse, Archbishop Bergan physical education teacher, said administrators promote physical activity – in the classroom and out.
