Teaching children good money management principles earned St. Mary School in Bellevue a nice payday.
The school won the $10,000 grand prize in the “Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids!” contest for its efforts to educate students about using money wisely.
Cosponsored by the Jackson Charitable Foundation and Discovery Education, the national contest encouraged teachers and families to teach children about four fundamental money concepts: earn, save, spend and donate.
The award was given March 7. The school also won $1,000 to donate to a charity of its choice, access to educational resources for teachers and families, and a fun financial literacy event conducted that day by Alice Wilder, producer of children’s educational programs “Blue’s Clues” and “Super WHY!”.
People at the school were elated, and take pride in encouraging students to become financially empowered adults who have a positive impact in their own lives and communities, said Trish Wallinger, principal.
