Families at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in Omaha enjoy a blessing of the animals Oct. 2 in honor of St. Francis of Assisi’s feast day. They grouped around a new statue in the parish garden of a Shiba Inu dog donated by a parishioner.

Dog statue joins St. Francis statue

Just in time to celebrate St. Francis of Assisi’s feast day Oct. 4, a bronze statue depicting a Shiba Inu dog joined a statue of the saint on the grounds of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in Omaha.

Donated by parishioner Jack Urban to honor his father’s love of the dog breed, his late mother and other relatives who have died, the statue was a highlight Oct. 2 of the parish’s annual blessing of the animals, marking the day the church celebrates the saint known for his love of nature.
