Duchesne Academy second in mock trials

Defending mock trial national champion Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart in Omaha went almost all the way again this year.

After winning state in December, the team of seven seniors and a junior from the all-girls high school traveled last month to Boise, Idaho, for the National High School Mock Trial Championship, where they took second to a team from Iowa.

The competition drew more than 45 state championship teams.

Duchesne’s team included seniors Molly Laughlin, Divya Nimmagadda, Brittany Wichman, Elena Maestas, Claire Benedix, Collette Hanusek and Ariana Haddad, and junior Olivia Stanek. It was coached by Laughlin’s father, Mark; her grandfather, Gerald; and Pat Cooper, all Omaha attorneys.
