Hallways become photo gallery

The hallways of St. Margaret Mary School in Omaha became a photo gallery after Christmas break.

Art teacher Carrie Hernandez worked with the school’s parent-sponsored enrichment committee to place posters of photos from 15 famous photographers in hallways from Jan. 4-20. She led tours of students and asked them to write or create other reactions to the work.

Kindergarten and first-grade students enjoyed the photos of William Wegman showing dogs in various costumes and poses, and the older students discussed artists such as Dorothea Lange, who chronicled the Great Depression and other events in America, Hernandez said.

"It’s a wonderful way to do art criticism," which includes students describing the photo, explaining why the artist created it, how effective it is and whether they like it, Hernandez said.
