Angelina Quevedo, left, and Guillermina Reyes watch the chicken empanadas they prepared being fried June 24 at the annual Kermes Festival held on the grounds of St. Mary Church and Norfolk Catholic Schools in Norfolk. Put on by the Hispanic community with help from Benedictine Missionary Sister Jania Maria Keogh, the celebration drew more than 800 people. It was founded 25 years ago by the late Benedictine Sister Margaret Garcia and includes dancing, music, children’s games and a raffle. Money raised goes to help Hispanics in need.
