Knights council, school honor vets
Noting the courage and sacrifice of the nation’s veterans, fifth-grader Landry Lehan won the grand prize for St. Columbkille School’s Veterans Day essay contest in Papillion.
Knights of Columbus Archbishop Bergan Council 6429 of Papillion, which works closely with St. Columbille Parish and sponsored the contest, awarded Lehan $25, and individual grade winners each took home $10: fourth-grader Grace Wozniak, fifth-grader Analise Erlbacher and her sister, sixth-grader Leah Erlbacher, and eighth-grader Elena Simpson.
The council also made a $130 matching donation of all prizes to Wounded Warriors Family Support, which helps families of veterans who have been wounded, injured or killed in combat.
The essay winners were recognized at a Nov.11 school assembly that included 25 veterans related to members of the eighth-grade class. The assembly also included a Navy ROTC honor guard, guest speaker Father David Reeson, pastor and a former military chaplain, and Lehan – who gave her prize money to the Wounded Warriors cause – reading her essay.
