Live radio broadcast highlights new class

Students at Pope John XXIII Central Catholic Junior/Senior High School in Elgin are getting hands-on media experience in a new broadcasting class begun this fall at the school.

Class participants, senior Noah Knievel and juniors Nicole Payne and Marie Meis, and their teacher, Julie Dwyer, talked about the new class during a live broadcast from the school of Spirit Catholic Radio’s "Spirit Mornings" program Dec. 6.

With equipment purchased through a $4,890 grant from Great Plains Communications, students produce monthly school newscasts for placement on YouTube and the school’s website, and they live-stream sporting events and other programs.

The class will help students develop communication skills and prepare for emerging technology, such as an anticipated prevalence of online video, Dwyer said.
