May crownings

Allison Vana, senior class president at Mercy High School in Omaha, crowns a statue of the Blessed Mother during the school’s annual May Crowning May 6. A longstanding tradition at many Catholic schools, May Crowning ceremonies honor the Blessed Mother during May, a month dedicated to Mary. They usually include prayers, songs and the crowning of a statue of Mary with a circlet of flowers. Other May Crownings included a May 7 event at Marian High School in Omaha and a May 10 procession at All Saints School in Omaha, where about 160 students and 20 staff processed several blocks with a Mary statue from their school to St. Joseph Church, where they conducted the ceremony.
