New Cassel Retirement Center in Omaha celebrated its 45th anniversary June 1 with a balloon release, cake and other treats.
Founded by the School Sisters of St. Francis in a building that once housed the community’s novices, the retirement center also is undergoing several changes as part of its celebration.
The chapel will receive its first name Aug. 22, when Archbishop George J. Lucas dedicates it as the Chapel of the Risen Christ. A newly renovated Fitness Center will open in July, including a physical therapy exam room, and the Franciscan Center day program is expanding to include an open floor plan and multi-purpose spaces.
Programs at the center include a group of seniors visiting a local child care and learning center to “Rock the Babies,” and others reading at an elementary school and spending time with students as a “Grandfriend.”
“As New Cassel looks toward the next 45 years, we see that our strength lies in the roots of our community,” said Julie Sebastian, CEO. “Built on the charism of the School Sisters, who in turn are grounded in the ministry of St. Francis of Assisi, New Cassel lives our mission of continuing the healing ministry of Jesus to all those who choose to be part of our community.”
