New Cassel honored for veterans’ advocacy

New Cassel Retirement Center in Omaha received a national award Oct. 31 for grassroots advocacy for veterans.

LeadingAge, an association that represents 6,000 nonprofit organizations serving the elderly across the country, presented its annual Outstanding Advocacy Award to Julie Sebastian, New Cassel president and CEO.

Honored during the association’s annual meeting and exhibition in Indianapolis, New Cassel was recognized for noting in June 2015 a pending loss of federal funding for day care and other non-skilled support services for veterans that would have impacted efforts including New Cassel’s Franciscan Centre, a day program for health-challenged veterans and others.

New Cassel, which is sponsored by the School Sisters of St. Francis, alerted senior care advocates, members of Congress and the media, and Congress restored the funding.
