Retirement center salutes veterans
The New Cassel Foundation recently honored 52 military veterans – including 26 veterans of World War II – who live at New Cassel Retirement Center or use its Franciscan Centre adult day program, both in Omaha.
The May 4 event included an American Legion honor guard, a speech by retired Maj. Gen. Roger Lempke, now director of military and veterans affairs for U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., and a "Remembering Our Fallen" exhibit honoring those who died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
The program also honored the spouses of those who served in the military – including 40 living at New Cassel – for their work on the home front, said Cindy Petrich, president of the foundation, which supports the retirement center founded by the School Sisters of St. Francis.
"The least we can do is thank these men and women with a very special day," Petrich said of veterans and their spouses.
