Mission group to hold fundraiser
IXIM Spirit of Solidarity, a mission group in the Archdiocese of Omaha that's been helping the Diocese of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, for 11 years, will hold its annual Cinco de Mayo Walk/Run fundraiser May 5 at South High School in Omaha.
All ages can enter a five-kilometer run, while children 8 and under can compete in a 400-meter run and children 13 and younger can compete in a one-mile run.
Breakfast burritos will be available, a marimba band will play live music and there will be face painters and clowns.
Entry fees range from $10 to $100, depending on the event and number participating.
Proceeds benefit IXIM, which stresses service and relationships as a way to promote solidarity, said Mark Zimmer, communications coordinator for IXIM.
The ministry was organized in response to Blessed John Paul II's call for dioceses in developed countries to act in solidarity with dioceses in Third World nations.
Since the first trip to Guatemala in 2002, the archdiocese has sent 214 missionaries to visit and work with men and women in Guatemala. Thirty missionaries will be in Guatemala June 14-26.
IXIM missionaries have built a house and chapel, installed water purification projects, held medical clinics, treated school children's teeth and painted churches and schools.
