More than 1,000 people gather for education dinner
A record crowd of more than 1,000 people helped raise more than $250,000 for student scholarships and educator awards at the 36th Annual Archbishop's Dinner for Education Sept. 12 at the Embassy Suites in La Vista.
The total includes a match by the Children's Scholarship Fund of New York of 33 cents per dollar raised.
The celebration of Catholic education included honoring eight people as administrators or educators of the year and remarks from Archbishop George J. Lucas, Gov. Dave Heineman and Patrick Slattery, the archdiocese's superintendent of schools.
"I appreciate all the honorees, event organizers and dinner supporters for their commitment to Catholic education and for being Christ to others," Archbishop Lucas said. "Their efforts will impact hundreds of families across northeast Nebraska."
Catholic schools in the archdiocese educate more than 19,000 students in 17 high schools and 53 elementary schools.
