Archdiocese to celebrate couples’ milestone wedding anniversaries
Couples celebrating milestone anniversaries – five, 25, 40, 50, 55, 60 or more years of marriage – are encouraged to register by July 27 for the Archdiocese of Omaha’s annual marriage celebration Masses in Omaha and Norfolk.
Early registration ensures that couples’ names will be placed in a brochure given to participants listing all those celebrating significant anniversaries, said Reggan Simons, executive secretary in the archdiocese’s Center for Family Life Formation.
Registration is requested after July 27 as well, to help organizers reserve pews for all those being recognized at the 2 p.m. Masses, Sept. 4 at St. Mary Church in Norfolk and Sept. 11 at St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha.
Archbishop Lucas will preside at both Masses, which will be preceded by a 1:30 p.m. rosary dedicated to all engaged and married couples, Simons said. A cake and punch reception will be held after each Mass, she said.
Peter Kennedy, the center’s manager of family life ministries, said the Masses are an important way to highlight the sacramental nature of marriage in the Catholic Church.
The gatherings also help people recognize the graces of mercy promoted by marriage, as spouses rely on their sacramental bonds even in the midst of sin or difficulty, Kennedy said.
"That’s an amazing mercy; that we can always come home, that bond is always there," he said.
