Catholic Cemeteries’ summer plans include workshops and history tours
Summertime at Catholic Cemeteries will include two history tours and two workshops: Financial and other considerations for burial plots; and Catholic funeral rites.
A tour of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Omaha from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 11 will be led by a retired Metropolitan Community College professor of Omaha history, Howard Hamilton, said Deacon Jim Tardy, outreach manager at Catholic Cemeteries.
Known for his tours of Omaha-area cemeteries, Hamilton will include background on historically significant families and interesting stories of the past, Deacon Tardy said.
People are invited to bring a sack lunch, and Catholic Cemeteries will provide beverages, dessert and blankets to sit on, Deacon Tardy said.
Hamilton will give a similar 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. tour July 9 at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha.
And at Calvary Cemetery’s main office, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. workshops will be offered: July 23 on burial site selection, including finances, full body burial, cremation, and appropriate grave and mausoleum decor; and Aug. 20 on Catholic funeral rites, including Scripture readings and music for wakes and funerals. Refreshments won’t be included in the workshops.
