CHANCE luncheon to feature former NFL player and coach
An ESPN sports analyst with a commitment to helping underprivileged children will bring his message of faith, teamwork and leadership to Omaha June 7.
Herman "Herm" Edwards, also an author and former NFL player and coach, will be the keynote speaker at the annual Children’s Scholarship Fund (CSF) of Omaha’s CHANCE (Children Having an Advantage in Nebraska for Choosing Education) Luncheon at the Baxter Arena.
Selected for his inspirational message and service to children, Edwards will headline the fundraiser for the organization, which provides scholarships to help low-income families send their children to private or parochial schools, said Sandra Reding, CSF executive director.
"One-hundred percent of the proceeds of the luncheon support scholarships," Reding said. "Nothing goes to administration, and we have donors who have underwritten Mr. Edwards’ fee and other costs."
The organization this academic year gave a record $2.6 million in scholarships to nearly 1,800 kindergarten through eighth-grade students.
Scholarships are renewable, and can be transferred from one private or parochial school to another; younger siblings also can be considered for scholarships once they enter kindergarten, as long as families continue to meet eligibility requirements.
Donors to CSF include the Archdiocese of Omaha, numerous parishes and Catholic schools throughout the archdiocese, corporations, foundations and individuals.
Edwards is active in numerous charitable and mentoring projects to help underprivileged children, including the Herm Edwards Youth Foundation, which he and his wife founded in 1985, and the Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp. He also co-authored "You Play to Win the Game – Leadership Lessons for Success On and Off the Field."
