Colors of Christmas art contest will benefit rural food pantries
The three Wise Men following the star to the Christ child – and bearing gifts to the baby Jesus.
Those will be among the Nativity scenes described in the Gospel of Matthew that students in kindergarten through sixth grade will be encouraged to depict in the sixth annual Colors of Christmas art contest organized by the Catholic Voice.
And again this year, students who participate will in a sense bear their own gifts – food for those in need. For each entry received, a can of food will be donated to a food pantry, with the help of sponsor Woodhouse Auto Family.
This time, the food will be delivered to food pantries in three rural areas of the archdiocese – St. Joseph Parish in Walthill, St. Vincent de Paul’s Simon House in Columbus and Northeast Community Action Center in Norfolk.
In last year’s inaugural effort to help the needy, a record 2,512 entries resulted in more than 100 cases of food being brought to food pantries in Omaha run by Catholic Charities and the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and homeless shelters in Omaha operated by Siena/Francis House and the Stephen Center.
Other details of this year’s contest will be similar to past contests. Beginning Nov. 1, students in the archdiocese’s Catholic schools, parish religious education classes or schooled at home are invited to compete in one of three categories: kindergarten through first grade, second through third and fourth through sixth.
Students can use crayons, markers, glitter, oil or water color paint, pastels – whatever they want. Entries will be accepted by the newspaper through Dec. 2.
Catholic Mutual Group is helping underwrite the contest with the support of four participating sponsors, the Cosgrave Company, Gloria Deo and Parables in Omaha and Divine Truth Christian Store in La Vista.
First-place winners in each category will receive $75 in gift cards from participating sponsors, second place $50 and third place $25. The overall winner will receive an additional $50 in gift cards.
This year’s contest will be based on Matthew 2:9-11: "They (wise men from the East) set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh."
