Funeral Tuesday for Elkhorn 2-year-old
The funeral Mass for 2-year-old Lane Graves of Elkhorn is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday (June 21) at St. Patrick Church in Elkhorn.
Lane died June 14 as the result of an alligator attack while on a family vacation at Walt Disney World reserve in Orlando. The vigil service was Monday, also at St. Patrick Church.
Lane and his family – father and mother, Matthew and Melissa, and sister, 4-year-old Ella, were relaxing June 14 near a play area when the alligator grabbed Lane as he waded at the edge of a lagoon, authorities said. His father fought the alligator and his mother called for help, but their son disappeared under the water. Lane’s body was found about 18 hours later, near the shore where he was dragged off.
Members of St. Patrick Parish prayed June 16 for Lane and his family during a regularly scheduled morning Mass and special rosary. Father Gary Ostrander, pastor, said 100 to 150 people attended the Mass, which was followed by the rosary for the family.
The Graves are members of the parish and Ella attended preschool at St. Patrick School. In a statement issued June 16 to ABC News, the family said, “Words cannot describe the shock and grief our family is experiencing over the loss of our son. To all of the local authorities and staff who worked tirelessly these past 24 hours, we express our deepest gratitude.”
The family has requested privacy during this time.
The parish posted on its website – stpatselkhorn.org – information for offering memorials or Mass intentions in Lane Graves’ name, which can be made online or through the mail to St. Patrick Parish, 20500 West Maple Road, Elkhorn, Neb., 68022.
