Omaha man ordained priest for FSSP
An Omaha man was among four men ordained priests for the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP) May 28 at St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha by Bishop Emeritus Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln.
Father Christopher Mahowald said his first assignment will be at a parish in San Diego.
The second oldest of eight children, Father Mahowald grew up attending the fraternity’s pre-Vatican II traditional Latin Masses, first offered at the former St. Patrick Church before being transferred in 2007 to Immaculate Conception Church, both in Omaha.
In both parishes, he was involved in the Legion of Mary, with experiences including door-to-door evangelization that touched his life and helped inspire his vocation, Father Mahowald said. That ministry was a "huge support structure as a teenager," he said.
Father Mahowald’s parents, Steve and Lois, said their son’s vocation was not immediately apparent. Homeschooled until his senior year when he graduated from Millard South High School, he made his living for several years making cabinets for homes and businesses.
"He was a cabinet maker who got a call to the priesthood and followed it," his father said.
Father Mahowald said those years were spent more firmly understanding his beliefs and discerning his calling, which led to the seminary.
