Student boasts perfect attendance for 13 years
Caleb Dempsey scores a perfect – 13.
That’s 13 years of perfect school attendance, never missing a day from kindergarten through graduation this month at Roncalli Catholic High School in Omaha.
And it includes spending the officially sanctioned "senior skip day" in April at a desk through eight periods of study hall.
He received a perfect attendance award at Roncalli Catholic’s graduation ceremonies May 22. Caleb received a similar award at his eighth-grade graduation at St. Margaret Mary School in Omaha.
His mother, Lisa Dempsey, director of marketing and recruitment at St. Bernard School in Omaha, said her son would not have been declared absent – but calling it "skip day" just didn’t sit well with Caleb.
"In his mind, it was the principle of it," she said.
Getting to school each day was not difficult for her son: he likes the routine, he’s been healthy and he is a morning person. His sister, Rachel, a sophomore at Roncalli, is not far behind. She missed only two days at St. Margaret Mary School and hasn’t missed a day of high school.
Caleb, who plans to attend the University of Nebraska Omaha this fall, said he enjoys school and decided in about third grade to attend every day he could.
"I was so healthy all these years, I had no reason not to go to school," he said.
