Youth Choir to hold auditions
Young people who want to combine a love for singing and their faith can audition this month and in August for the Archdiocesan Youth Choir.
Open to students in fourth grade through high school, the choir has two groups – the Boys and Girls Choir and – for more advanced students – the Magnificat Treble Choir, said Karen Johnson, youth choir director.
Auditions will be held August 6, 13 and 20, from 9 a.m. to noon in Room 208 of the St. Cecilia Institute in the Msgr. Graham Building, 3900 Webster St., behind St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha.
The choir’s mission is formation for lifelong praise of God through sacred liturgical choral music, Johnson said. Students will be taught by Johnson and Katherine Turner, assistant director.
The choir sings at events in the cathedral, including Holy Week and Easter services, the Blessing of the Animals, the Flower Festival and the archdiocesan eighth-grade Mass.
On special occasions, such as the St. Cecilia Day Concert, the Feast of Epiphany and Good Friday, the choir joins with the adult Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Marie Rubis Bauer, director of archdiocesan and cathedral music ministries.
Last year, 25 youths from seven parishes and 11 schools participated in the youth choir, singing in 21 liturgies and special events, including a trip to two Iowa parishes and a stay at a summer camp.
Tuition is $20 per month or $180 for the school year. Scholarships are available.
