‘Card shower’ encouraged for priest celebrating 70th anniversary of ordination
People are invited to send cards of celebration to Father James V. Brown, a Snyder native now in California whose 70 years of priesthood includes more than three decades in the Archdiocese of Omaha.
For the past few weeks the church bulletin at St. James Parish in Omaha has included postal and email addresses, telephone and fax numbers to reach Father Brown, a member of the Order of Augustinian Recollects. He was in residence at the parish for 21 years, until he was called in 2006 to live and serve at the St. Augustine Priory in Oxnard, Calif.
Father Brown will celebrate a June 16 Mass of Thanksgiving at the priory for his 70th anniversary of ordination, 76th anniversary of first vows and his 95th birthday.
He held several positions in the archdiocese, including as pastor of Holy Ghost Parish in Omaha; spiritual director of Boys Town; and founder and 13 years as director of the archdiocese’s youth ministry and young adult office. Father Brown also introduced the Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) movement to Omaha, wrote the national TEC manual and was on a committee that organized Theology on Tap in Omaha. A highlight of his time at Boys Town was escorting Blessed Teresa of Kolkata during her visit to Omaha in 1976.
