Student kudos in art contest

A seventh-grader at St. Bernadette School in Bellevue earned an honorable mention for her entry in “This is My Mexico” Children’s Drawing Contest 2017.
Sulema Nungaray, whose winnings included a diploma and a package of Mexican literature books, also became the first Omaha student to win an award in the contest, sponsored by Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Affairs through the Institute of Mexicans Abroad.
Nungaray’s artwork was among 50 honorable mentions – and 12 top entries – selected from thousands of submitted pieces. Her entry also will be part of an exhibition touring the world beginning in Mexico City, and a calendar to be distributed to Mexican consulates and embassies around the globe.
The contest’s theme, “The Monarch Butterfly and its Life Cycle in North America,” invited students ages 6-14 to learn about the insect and its habitat, life cycle and challenges faced during its migration through Canada, the United States and Mexico, and create drawings or paintings based on that information.
This was the first year the school participated in the contest. Every first- through eighth-grade student at St. Bernadette submitted entries, said Lynn Schultz, principal.
