Students earn FCSLA scholarships

Ten students from the Archdiocese of Omaha are among scholarship winners recently announced by the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA), a national fraternal benefit society.

Two received $1,250 college sophomore awards from the national office in Beachwood, Ohio: Katie Petersen of St. Patrick Parish in Fremont and Doane University in Crete, and Daniel Popelka of St. Columbkille Parish in Papillion and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL).

Six received scholarships through Omaha Branch W-018, including $300 each to two siblings, fifth-grader Benedict and eighth-grader Elizabeth Rice of St. Bernadette Parish and School. Awards of $500 each went to William Janecek of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Omaha and a sophomore at Mount Michael Benedictine School near Elkhorn, and Hailey Zuroske of St. Wenceslaus Parish, a junior at Marian High School, both in Omaha. College scholarships of $600 went to UNL juniors Matthew Popelka of St. Columbkille and Vincent Rice of St. Bernadette.

Two students at Daniel J. Gross Catholic High School in Bellevue were honored with the Thomas Jelinek Sr. Memorial Scholarship: junior Mary Steil of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and senior Julio Ramirez of Ss. Peter and Paul Parish, both in Omaha.
