Sister Bernadine served as teacher, principal in Omaha

Sister Bernadine (Emmet) Nash, who served with the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville for 73 years, including 14 years in Omaha, died June 3 in Louisville, Kentucky. She was 95.

Funeral services were private, with burial at St. Michael Cemetery in Louisville. A memorial Mass was to be offered later.

During her 42 years as an educator, Sister Bernadine was known to many by her former religious name, Sister Emmet.

Her service took her to the former Blessed Sacrament School in Omaha, where she was a teacher from 1954 to 1959 and a principal from 1976 to 1985.

She also taught at schools in Louisville; Mount Vernon, Indiana; and North Platte, Nebraska.

Sister Bernadine, a native of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, entered the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville in 1947. She graduated from Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio, with a bachelor’s degree in education and from Creighton University in Omaha with a master’s degree in education.

After retiring she served as a coordinator at the order’s motherhouse and volunteered as a hospital chaplain and with the American Red Cross and with the elderly, all in Louisville.

Sister Bernadine is survived by a sister and three brothers, many nieces, nephews and friends, and the Ursuline community of sisters and associates.
