Bell ringers raise donations for needy

Students at Holy Cross School in Omaha competed this Advent to see which homeroom could raise the most money and personal care items for the needy and people confined to their homes during the school’s Operation Giving project.

Standing outside the school before classes began, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students who are part of the school’s Student Congress greeted fellow students, ringing bells as a reminder to give.

The homeroom donating the most money will be rewarded with a Dec. 19 lock-in with fun activities planned throughout the school. Transitional kindergarten through eighth grade classes are participating.

Running from Nov. 27 through Dec. 15, Operation Giving will provide donations such as gift cards to people in Holy Cross Parish and the wider community, and items such as shaving cream, toothpaste and toothbrushes to residents of the Douglas County Health Center in Omaha.

The project is a way to help students practice their "discipline with purpose skills" by learning to sacrifice to serve others, said Roberta Coolon, first-grade teacher and co-planner of the project.
